As chair and chief executive of Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust, we are committed to promoting equality of opportunities and diversity. The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 imposed upon public authorities a general duty to eliminate unlawful discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and promote good relations between people of different racial groups. This is known as the Race Equality Duty. The Foundation Trust has a legal duty to comply with the Race Equality Duty and under specific duties to prepare and publish a Race Equality Scheme*
The 2005 amendment to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 placed a statutory duty on public authorities to promote disability equality. The legislation expects public bodies to take steps to remove barriers disabled people face when accessing employment or services. When carrying out their functions, public bodies must have due regard to eliminate unlawful disability discrimination, eliminate disability related harassment, promote equality of opportunities, promote positive attitudes towards disabled persons and encourage participation by disabled persons in public life. This is known as the Disability Equality Duty. The Foundation Trust has a legal duty to comply with the Disability Equality Duty and under the specific duties to prepare and publish a Disability Equality Scheme*

The Foundation Trust has a newly established Equality and Diversity Steering Group chaired, by the Chief Executive. The purpose of the Group is to lead on the development and implementation of equality and diversity requirements and initiatives to ensure that in our practice as an employer all our employees are treated fairly and that healthcare provision is accessible, responsive and appropriate for all groups of people.

Child Health provides the following services for disabled children and young people:
The Foundation Trust ensures that it meets the needs of its patients in providing equality of access to services, by providing a translation and interpreting service for patients who need or request such a service. It also enables the Trust to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and Race Relations Act 1976 in regards to translation and interpretation.
